Audio: What's your favorite carol or holiday song?
My all time favorite Christmas song is "This Christmas" by Donny Hathaway. It's not officially the Christmas season until I hear it! It has been covered many times, successfully by some, but the original is still THE version to me.
One version that I really like is by The Whispers:
When I was a little kid, this was apparently my favorite Christmas song. So much so that my aunt gave me her 45 (gasp! How old am I that I'm talking about records?!) after i made her play it for me 40 billion times in a row. (Still have it too!)
Here are a few other songs that touch my heart each Christmas:
Show us your favorite local band.

That would be Carol Plunk...she's "not just another chick with a guitar"!

What song do you wish would never show up on a karaoke list?
"Desperado". How many times can that song be torn to shreds in one night?!
What are the 10 most memorable music performances you've seen? (Remember, "memorable" may not be good.)

I'm waaaay too tired to come up with 10, but I will do a few. They are all from my annual trek to the Memphis In May Beale Street Music Festival. Even though it always rains at least one day, there are too many drunken (very) young people and there are just TOO MANY FRIGGIN' PEOPLE, period, I go every year. At least I have for the 3 or 4 years. One of my husbands (I have 2), The Agitator, (they are just my friends; I'm not a bigamist!) and I go all three days. By Sunday night, I'm beat.
But this is one way (I tell myself) that I can prove that I'm not too old. (Even though all those obviously-too-young-to be drinking young people REALLY get on my nerves.)
I love live music, just about any live music. In no certain order:
I've always like Steve Miller, but this guy is PHENOMINIMALLY talented. My mouth was hanging open, watching him play guitar.
It was raining...and this awesome band just kept on playing. Steve and some of the other guys playing at the front of the stage donned raincoats and kept jamming. It was a cold rain and the crowd pressed in to keep warm, I think. Me and The Agitator were right down in front, so we were toasty warm.
I emailed his website days later to say how awesome the show was and Steve even shot me an email back! I mean, I guess it was Steve...
2. Indigo Girls
I saw them the same year as The Steve Miller Band, on a different day. I didn't even want to see them, even though I'm supposed to love them. Both of my husbands went to see them with me.
While the duo was on stage, there was a torrential downpour. I mean, like someone dropped a stadium-sized bucket of water on the festival. The women just kept performing. They traded their electric guitars for acoustic ones and played the hell out of them while soaking wet. It was amazing.
I was worried they would get electrocuted though.
3. George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic
I had never been to a concert like this before or since. There are no words to describe. They start the first song and there is never a break. They just play continuously for two hours. It was fantastic!
There was at least 30 people on the stage, singing, dancing, performing, you name it. There was a guy playing bass in a diaper, a skinny muscular man in a tight leather outfit, dancing quite suggestively and a Chucky doll sitting on the amplifier.
George's granddaughter performed a song about weed (like anyone needed encouragement!). SHE had a powerful voice.
It wasn't just a "concert," it was a life-changing event.
4. Ozomatli
I had never even HEARD of this band before. That's the beauty of these music festivals, you run into all kinds of bands and musicians you've never heard of, but you really dig.
They played rap, rock and jazz with a blazing horn section. It was one of the most high-energy shows I've ever been to!
5. Johnny Clegg with Juluka and Savuka
Another "never heard of before". Fabulous! We stumbled upon them one year that the country we were celebrating was South Africa. We just sat in the grass, watched the sun set and listened to their beautiful, powerful music.
Yet another "never heard of before". This blues singer/guitarist almost brought you to TEARS. He played behind his back, he played over his head, he played running through the crowd.
He gave an inspired, charismatic performance. The Agitator loved him so much, when we got home at 1:30 in the morning, he bought each of RBB's CDs from Amazon.
Well, that's almost 10! Last year, some of the acts we saw were "old timers": BB King, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and James Brown (RIP). That was the second time I'd seen JB and man, NOBODY'S band is tighter!
Hullo! I’ve sharing Christmas music that I love! Feel free to share with me. I’m adding stuff as I remember/hear it.
